Day 12 27/5/16 Heading North through the Yorkshire moors

Day 12 Heading north through the Yorkshire moors.

This morning , even though we planned to leave early (ish) we had a bit of a slow start getting everything buttoned down and secure plus final packing at David and Kaye's.

Rear view of David & Kaye's house

Our chariot perfectly fettled for the next few weeks, 1935 Alvis SC Speed 20
We left the Webster's in Leicester, battled the English traffic and only lost David and Kaye at one roundabout. Not bad at all given the traffic and road conditions.

Beautiful country lane not far from David and Kaye's

We found some delightful country lanes and back roads to avoid the worst traffic hot spots.  As we had left home rather later than anticipated we were driving late afternoon and into the night but as we are in summertime over here, it was still brilliant daylight. Pleasing to note we have not had any nasty weather to contend with.

12/60 passing period houses on route to Yorkshire moors
I am mesmerized by the number of chimney's running off one stack!

It is incredible to drive through these lanes, pulling to one side when cars or buses approach from the other direction (in the passing place), just barely managing to squeeze past. The countryside is at its absolute best although we have missed the daffodils.  The hawthorn hedges have been stunning as have the Horse Chestnut trees in both pink and white. Bluebells are popping their brilliant blue almost mauve heads through lush green grass wherever you walk or drive.

Very interesting gateways to villages and towns across the route

About an hour before reaching our destination for the evening , whilst meandering down one of these lanes suddenly the remains of Rievaulx Abbey just appeared from nowhere. Back in 2011 we had actually walked through Rievaulx Terrace, approached from an upper road, and looked down on these same ruins. The ruins are a reminder of the times when Henry VIII was in power, changed his allegiance from the Catholic church and formed the Church of England. May have had something to do with his wish to have 8 wives! As a result of this change of allegiance Henry ordered the destruction of monasteries, churches, abbeys which did not follow his doctrine. These remains are evident everywhere.

Almost there! - 12/60 in silhouette.

Alvi against the evening sky

We arrived at Lovesome Hill Farm, a working farm which also offers B&B where Mary had prepared a delightful meal for us so it was good we did not have to go and find a meal as we were all quite tired. It was a big day of driving.  The English traffic, and it was a Friday before bank holiday Monday, is quite nerve racking when driving in a vintage car. We all slept brilliantly that night!!
