Day 19 3/6/16 Shetland Car Show tour Day 2

Day 19 Shetland Car Show Day 2 touring day

What a difference a day makes!!  Today we woke to beautiful sunshine with some wind so it is a little cool.  But we have glorious sunshine.  After some discussions we rejoined the prewar car tour and went north to the village of Aith. We did drive through the only naturally occurring wood on the Islands.  All timber was cleared by the Vikings some centuries ago and in so doing the island has not been able to restore the trees due to the very harsh weather and grazing animals.

Splendid view from Lunna House - clear blue skies!!

This is theri version of a dual lane carriage way! One car stops while the other passes.

Following the 12/60

Last pocket of natural wood on the islands - it is regrowth but is slowly coming back.
From here we went to Walls, another delightful village and then to the Shetland textile museum spinning wheels.

Prewar cars make the next stop!

The post war cars meet up with the group.
We stopped at Michael's Wood - this is a commemorative wood created for a much loved Shetlander, who died far to young after a short battle with testicular cancer and was too embarrassed to have it seen to - he was just 21 years old.  The wood was started by his family and has now growing into a considerable garden with contribution from the community.
